The event took place on Saturday, June 2nd and Sunday June 3rd. It was held at Bucketworks in downtown Milwaukee.
Event by Event analysis
There was a lot of great presentations through out Saturday and Sunday. Saturday’s presentations on Plugins – took developers through all skill levels on the three presentations very seamlessly and it felt like one presentation broken down into 3 sections. Also all three had great audience interaction – with advance and even coding heavy presentations, advanced presenters can get too wrapped up in the information and code and lose their audience very quickly. All three of these presentations had the audience asking questions, getting involved with their unique scenarios and providing the speakers answers to their questions.
Another favorite presentations I saw was on Navigation Styling. It was very well done on a topic and WordPress element that has been in transition within the past couple of updates and that is the WP navigation menu. Rachel Baker does a fine job to take the complexity out of it and provide great material on how to customize the navigation menu easily in the new WordPress updates.
Genius Bar Events
I took part in the Genius Bar on Saturday and Sunday afternoon sessions to help out fellow WordPress users at the event. I had some a lot interesting and unique issues that were brought up. I love the Genius Bar because of the spontaneity of the hour. Love thinking and problem solving like that, it is similar to a help desk call without the hostility (99.9% awesome and friendly people that are a little frustrated wanting answers) and profanity. Got to solve 3 out of the 4 problems relatively easily but the last person on Sunday posed a very unique CSS problem that was theme related and finally figured it out.
Conclusion
WordCamp Milwaukee exceeded my expectations for the event. I met a lot of great WordPress users, developers, and designers out there. This WordCamp personified what WordCamps are about – people getting together, having fun, sharing information about WordPress and help everyone’s skill set in WordPress.
