WordCamp Philly was a great WordPress event that happened this weekend on the campus of Temple University and the Architecture Center of Philadelphia. I spoke first in the designer track and my topic was “Customization of The Twenty Eleven Theme”. It went well but I felt like I rushed through the presentation but thought I answered most of the questions pretty throughly. Especially the ones on creating child themes. I wanted to do more on theme’s use of HTML5 and responsive design concepts but maybe next time.
There were a lot of great presentations though out Saturday. I really enjoyed Jake Goldman’s – “Editing the Visual Editor” and Andrew Nacin’s – “Advanced WordPress Techniques” – love the presentations that challenge me and raise my skill level. I thought all of the presentations were well done and very informative.
Saturday night was a great time – the event shifted into party mode at National Mechanics in Olde City Philadelphia. Hanging out with attendees, sponsors, speakers and organizers was fun and I always love meeting new people in a social setting like those kinds of parties. Surprisingly it was really informative in hearing everybody’s experience with WordPress. It gave me some great ideas and inspiration on some of my WordPress projects – present and future.
Sunday – the event was an informal session focused on things: the WordPress core, plugins and themes. I mixed it up by working with the Classic Kubrick theme (code name Blue) and testing out some CSS styling on it in the WP 3.3. beta version. Also was working with my friend Travis Hoglund (brilliant developer) collaborating on some practical and innovative plugins.
If you have any interest at all in WordPress – you should make it out to a WordCamp in your city.
